摘要

A top UN climate official on Monday urged nations to increase their targets for reducing carbon emissions and facilitate the rapid launch of a new green fund to help developing nations combat climate change. However, the plea from Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the recent UN climate conference in Cancun, Mexico, may fall on deaf ears because governments appear hesitant to ratchet up their pledges to cut emissions in the face of a weak economy (OD Dec.14,p1). "Cancun was a big step, bigger than many imagined might be possible. But the time has come for all of us to exceed our own expectations because nothing less will do," Figueres said.
