This article provides a summary of an AACC International hot topic session that took place during the 2010 AACC International Annual Meeting, held on Oct. 24-27, 2010. The session, which featured experts in the areas of regulation and legislation, provided updates on topics of top concern for industry. Topics discussed comprise: Latest news on government nutrition (2010 dietary guidelines for Americans - current status, added sugars, sodium, glycaemic index, folic acid fortification, gluten free); Nutrition and obesity issues on the forefront; Update on food safety legislation (preventive process control - HACCP, traceability, inspection frequency, foreign supplier safety assurance program, imported expedited entry, FDA import third party certification, user fees, mandatory recall authority, new dietary ingredients, criminal enforcement, accountability and other considerations); and Forecast for food marketing enforcement and policy (FDA enforcement, FTC enforcement, lawsuits brought by private parties under state laws).
