The lack of shallow water rig requirements in the US Gulf is likely to continue until the threat of hurricane season has passed, i.e. until well into the fourth quarter. Day rates have softened even further as drilling contractors attempt to keep their rigs working. No such problems in the deepwater sector, where operators have to plan a couple of years ahead in order to secure rig time. USA GULF OF MEXICO: Market sources advise that BP has issued a tender for an ultra-deepwater floater with a minimum water depth capability of 10,000 fsw. The area of operations will primarily be the US Gulf of Mexico, however it is understood that other regions are not to be excluded. Commencement will be between early 2009 and late 2010, with a contract duration of five or seven years. Bids are due September 10.
