Optical fibre bio-sensors consist of a reactive biological process coupled to one or more optical fibre transducers. The majority of optical fibre bio-sensors make use of fluorescence, absorption or reflection, while a small number are based on chemical or biological luminescence. The sensors are said to be extrinsic if the optical fibre is used solely as a light transmission medium, or intrinsic if the measurement is made by monitoring a change in the properties of the fibre itself. Enzymatic sensors make use of an enzyme reaction in which one of the substrates or products is detected either directly if a change in optical properties occurs, or indirectly via a chemical sensor and optical fibre. All optical fibre bio-sensors are immune to electrical and electrochemical interference and can be used in remote measurement applications.
