The aim of this study was to compare safety of propofol versus a combination of medetomidine and ketamine (MK) as anesthetic agents in the common buzzards. Eight adult common buzzards of unknown sex, weighing 750-1000 grams, were anaesthetized twice,10 days apart, using both treatments. Birds were given combined medetomidine (0,l rng/kg), and ketamine (10 mg/kg) intramuscularly or propofol (10mg/kg, by 2-4mg/kg boluses) intravenously. Heart and respiratory rates, cloacal temperature, elecrolytes andarterial blood gas values were recorded before and every 5 minutes after anaesthesia induction for 30 minutes and at 5 minutes after reversal with ati-pemazole (0.5mg/kg; MK group) or last administration of propofol. All buzzards survived the MK and propofol anaesthesia. Changes in cardiopulmonary parameters during anaesthesia were: moderate hypoxemia, moderate hyper-capnia, primary respiratory acidosis and hypothermia. Buzzards given MK had a significantly decrease in respiratory and heart rate, whereas buzzards given propofol appeared to maintain respiratory and heart rate. The MK combination seems a useful anesthetic technique for short procedures in buzzards, but should be used with caution and carefully monitored due to the before mentioned effects. Comparatively propofol facilitated a smoother recovery, without flapping of wings. Nonetheless, monitoration and oxygen supplementation are recommended with this drug too.
