MECHEL BOOSTS COAL OUTPUT 24 percent IN 2008, CUTS STEEL OUTPUT 3 percent

Mechel reduced steel production 3 percent to 5.9 million tonnes in 2008, but boosted overall coal production 24 percent to 26.39 million tonnes, the coal and metals group said in a press release. Coking coal production rose 45 percent to 15.1 million tonnes, and steam coal output grew 4 percent to 11.2 million tonnes. The year saw an increase in our production of both coke and steam coal and coal concentrate resulting from the acquisition of Yakutugol in October 2007.
