Postmenopausal women with a history of irregular menses and elevated androgens are at increased risk for death from coronary heart disease. It is possible that the degree of menstrual irregularity in adolescents and associated metabolic and endocrine changes may be predictive for the development of coronary heart disease in later life. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute conducted a 10-year longitudinal multicenter study, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study (NGHS)—a study designed to investigate cardiovascular and other risk factor correlates in adolescent girls, which were associated with the development of obesity.
