摘要

In the autumn of 2000 I embarked on a new series of work, Latin Blood, exploring the human form and themes of identity and connection; I was particularly keen to visit somewhere with bold colour and rhythm, a 'hot blooded' temperament, strong earth connections, historical/ritual markings and both Spanish and Indian influences. I was fortunate to be able to visit Mexico to help develop this new ceramic work.Arriving in Mexico City, I made straight for the National Museum of Anthropology and was immediately drawn to the burnished terracotta from West Mexico (200-600 AD). Rounded, full-bodied, the pieces often took on human or animal form. Figures were full of emotional expression and crafted with a strong human touch, often with a soft humour. The women were beautifully curved and sensual. The later, more functional pieces (Mixtec jugs, bowls, storage vessels, 1000-1521 AD) also echoed the human form - fat bellied with curved necks. The patterning with spots and stripes, often in black and darker terracotta/red and in harmony with the form, was strangely modern. I was moved by these simple, earthy yet finely crafted ancient ceramics, and they inspired my new work.
