INTERNATIONAL-LORI KENT contemplates the latest ceramic forms from American artist, Jeffrey Mongrain. Jeffrey Mongrain's five sculptures exhibited at the Perimeter Gallery in New York City earlier this year can be recognized as ordinary things filtered through the artist's imagination. Elemental, reduced works in ceramic, finely crafted, are based on common objects-a pool, a plumb, a railing, a pillow-but they tell stories of sexuality, loss, and the act of searching. As in previous work, Mongrain expands conceptions of clay, stone, and glass. The surfaces are cold yet appear velvet-like in some instances, sensuous, touchable. Each sculpture claims its own place in the gallery. Light illuminates the translucent or highly polished graphite surfaces.
