Zinc Aluminum, Copper Aluminum, and Zinc Copper Aluminum Hydroxo Salts with a Layered Hydrotalcite-Type Structure

The reaction of a solution containing zinc, copper,and aluminum nitrates with a solution of ammonia produces a zinccopper aluminum triple hydroxonitrate of variable composition[Zn_mCu_nAl(OH)_(2m+2n+2)][(NO_3).pH_2O], wherem=0.25-0.92 and n=0.9-1.0. The reaction of a solution of asolution containing the sulfates of these metals with ammoniaproduces a triple hydroxosulfate. When the ternary hydroxo-nitrateis kept in a solution of ammonium acetate, it is converted into theternary hydroxoacetate. In addition, zinc aluminum and copperaluminum double hydroxonitrates and a copper aluminumhydroxosulfate of variable composition have been obtained. X-rayphase analysis indicates that these compounds are hydroxo saltswith a layered structure of the hydrotalcite type.
