As I prepare for my next studio sale, I think about why I'm a potter. I look over the latest series of covered jars, several teapots, some casseroles and a hundred cups waiting for handles to be attached. A dozen of these cups are all fat and round. The next few are like a cone with the foot flared out. About half of them are thrown off the hump. The perspective is different when the clay is up high; the cups that come from the hump are not the same as the ones from a single mound of clay.I have been doing sales at my studio twice a year for 20 years. Preparing for each sale is hard work; it takes over my life for about ten weeks. So, why is it done, how is it done and is it something you should think about doing?
