The blue car, hard to tell but, say, 105 mph, the blue car coming into Turn 2 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca wide open at 105, jerks the handbrake and goes sideways. A little lift then nails the gas to the floor, lighting up the back tires, smoke billowing out, nose of the car pointed to the inside of the corner, back end swinging wide. The yellow Pontiac GTO, the new one, is five feet behind and lurches sideways, a little less angle, roaring on full throttle, rear wheels sending up a huge swirling cloud of smoke. The two cars are side by side, sliding sideways, smoke everywhere, wide-open screaming and they are almost to the corner. Welcome to the 2nd Annual Road & Track U.S. Sports Car Invitational in Monterey, California. The paddock is full of Porsches, Ferraris, Mazdas, vintage NASCAR racers, wreathed in the friendly competition and camaraderie of the good ol' club event and, for the first time ever at Laguna Seca, Drifters. The origin of drifting is lost in the mist of Japan's mountain roads where, years ago, joyful to be free from urban gridlock, road warriors flung their cars in Samurai abandon.
