If you still have an audience after you state your occupation, the trick is to survive the discomfort of the pregnant pause that follows and reply to the inevitable next question, "so what exactly is that?" A lot of management consultants may like to convince you that there is some black art in their trade. But the answer isn't nearly as exciting or as intriguing as one might hope. The management consulting business model is based on a very sound set of principles that most organisations might do well to emulate, but may also find difficult to replicate.
