Planning parameters and standards for the new high-speed railway line between cologne and the Rhine/main conurbation

The newly-built Cologne-Rhine/Main rail link is the first railway fine in Germany to have been built solely for high-speed passenger traffic. In laying out the line it was thus no longer necessary to cater for the many much more detailed requirements that exist when there are mixed operations at widely differing speeds. This made it possible to develop planning principles that permitted a more flexible and lower-cost route to be chosen for the new line.
