In recent years, regional rail services have experienced a veritable boom. One key driving force behind this has been environmental demands. When it comes to reducing noise levels, the various arrangements of DMU power packs (of which a number of examples are given in this article) offer considerable room for improvement, and it makes sense to use it. However, right up until the present, there is still an absence of adequate incentive systems for industry to develop quiet trains and for operators to use them.
