Scientific writing can be described as expository, meaning that its purpose is to explain something to its readers. Therefore, the author of a scientific article should write clearly and concisely, and he or she should ensure that the content of the article is well organized and grammatically and mechanically correct. Radiologic technologists sometimes are overwhelmed by the idea of writing for publication. However, by revisiting some basic rules of writing and paying attention to the style preferences of the journal, you might find the task less daunting. The objective of this column is to describe some of the elements of writing an effective scientific article and provide ways to avoid common pitfalls.
