Types, sources and challenges of financing transportation infrastructure projects

Project financing is a method of financing that has been adopted for many high-profile projects, including Euro Disneyland and the Eurotunnel. Employing a carefully engineered financing mix, project financing has also been used to fund large-scale natural resource projects, from gas/oil pipelines and refineries to electricity-generating facilities and hydro-electric projects. Increasingly, project financing is emerging as the preferred alternative to conventional methods of financing transportation infrastructure and other large-scale transport-related projects worldwide. This article gives a brief overview of types and sources of financing transportation infrastructure projects, as well as the challenges.
