Long-Term Outcomes Promising For Low-Risk Prostate Cancer Patients Treated With CyberKnife

The first research on the long-term efficacy of treating low-risk prostate cancer patients with Accuray Incorporated's CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery system revealed that 93 percent of patients had no recurrence of prostate cancer 5 years after undergoing the treatment. The rate compares favorably to other forms of prostate cancer treatment, such as surgery and conventional radiation therapy. Published in the January 10 issue of Radiation Oncology the study combined data from 41 patients treated with CyberKnife radiosurgery at Stanford University in Stanford, California, and Naples Community Hospital in Naples, Florida. In addition to demonstrating high disease-free survival rates, the study found low levels of urinary and rectal toxicity following the 5-day course of treatment. Researchers concluded that CyberKnife radiosurgery can control prostate cancer while protecting critical structures, minimizing side effects of treatment and preserving a patient's quality of life.
