Gas futures managed gains in spite of tumbling equities, oil and other commodities. After opening at $3.936, prices fell to an intraday low of $3.90 before buying activity materialized. In the afternoon, prices found strength up to an intraday high of $4.039, driven partly by a falling natural gas rig count. The number of rigs drilling for gas in the US fell by 5 to 953 this week, according to data from Baker Hughes. The total is up 43 from a seven-year low in July. However, it should be noted the decline in gas rigs were all vertical well rigs.
