Even for an occasional commuter like myself, travelling across London brings you face to face with some aspect of the largest civil construction project attempted within the capital city for many years. Paddington, my usual point of entry, is bounded on the West by a huge building site, and taxis and buses have been reassigned to some nether region beyond the Metropolitan line. It will all be worth it, you mutter to yourself, not least because it will enable visitors from the Western regions to reach the Excel and 02 arenas without spending half the morning travelling across London.
