Some of the brightest female minds in science are abandoning an academic career earlier than men because of a lack of female role models, mentoring and career support. A qualitative study from the Wellcome Trust found that while women - and men -found a career in academia rewarding, they found difficulty in securing funding and pressure to publish as major challenges to success in first few years of a post-doctoral career.
