Ultra-early doppler sonography for stroke.

Stroke is the third most common cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the UK and is predicted to become the most common cause of death worldwide by 2020. Several large multicentre, randomised, placebo-controlled trials have shown benefit for early treatment with alteplase (recombinant tissue plasminogen activator) in acute ischaemic stroke, despite a risk of early haemorrhage. Thrombolytic treatment needs to be started within 3-6 h-of onset of symptoms and this timely delivery has required substantial reorganisation 昽f conventional stroke services. The extent to which this reorganisation has actually occurred varies between Stroke units and between countries.
