Students approaching the end of their pre-registration courses often feel poorly prepared to take on the day-to-day ward management responsibilities of qualified staff nurses. Before qualifying, nursing students working on wards must display the management and leadership skills of a registered nurse, including problem solving, negotiating with and providing clear direction to others, assertiveness, conflict resolution and the ability to challenge poor or unprofessional practice.
