While improving the health and well-being of the people of Poland is not specifically discussed in the paper that follows, assessing and encouraging the use of nursing theory and other theories in nursing practice is specified. The author of this introduction is admittedly biased toward believing in the importance of a generally well-educated, and theoretically-minded, nursing work force to help facilitate the health, healing, and longevity of a country's population. The authors of the paper that follows this introduction report on their efforts to assess the use of nursing theory and some other theories by nurses in practice in Poland, and to evaluate a continuing education program designed to promote the use of nursing theory and theories in general in nursing practice in that country. They do not attempt to evaluate if such an educational program or knowledge attainment is correlated to nurses' actions or nurses' job satisfaction, or to any patient outcomes or patient satisfaction, although they hint at possible next steps in their research.
