VERIFYING ADEQUATE VENTILATION is critical when your patient has an endotracheal tube: to verify tracheal tube placement during intubation or detect inadvertent esophageal placement to detect tube dislodgement. Measuring your patient's end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO_2) level, the CO_2 concentration at the end of expiration (its highest level), can help. Along with your clinical assessment findings, measuring ETCO_2 can help reassure you that ventilation is adequate or signal hypoventilation and the need for immediate intervention.
