Container preference differs regionally: Growers weigh wood boxes vs. plastic containers for large tree production

Tour most of the nurseries along the West Coast, and you'll notice a common denominator: tree boxes. For years it seemed to be a "California thing," but will using wooden boxes for large tree production catch on in other markets? "Growing large-caliper-size trees in containers really began in Southern California 50 years ago," said Robert Crudup, president of Valley Crest Tree Co. in Calabasas, Calif. "And Valley Crest Tree Co. has been growing trees in containers and boxing them for the last 50 years. Most production of large-caliper trees was balled-and-burlapped in those days."
