Potato nematodes and potato ward disease.

The paper presents results from the Agrobiokon EDR research project, a EU funded Interreg project with partners from the Dutch and Germany potato research and industry along the Dutch/German boarder. Potato nematodes and ward disease (Synchytrium endobioticum) are major problems in the intensive starch potato growing areas of the northern Netherlands and Germany (federal state of Lower Saxony). The article describes both diseases, shows selected research results from the Agrobiokon project and gives recommendations on dissemination through advisory services. During 2006-07, the field resistance against ward disease of 29 starch potato varieties was tested. Main recommendations are the use of resistant varieties, multi-criteria farm-specific variety mixes and better co-operation of all stakeholders like farmers, breeders, traders, and processing industry.
