Crop management strategies for organic cultivation of potato for processing. Part 4: cultivar choice and location.

Studies were carried out during 2003-04 on 3 organc farms in Germany to compare 9 cultivars for French fries production and 6 cultivars for chrisp production. Data are presented on crop yield, tuber size (more than 50 mm and more than 40 mm), sugar content at harvesting and after 4 months of storage at 4 or 8 degrees C. French fries cultivars Agria and Marena are recommended, as well as chrisp cultivars Marlen, Sempra and Verdi. Lighter, easily heated soils are better for French fries production, while heavier fertile soils are good for chrisp production..
