Crop management strategies for organic cultivation of potatoes for processing. Part 1: clover management.

Approximately 200 ha is grown organically in Germany with processing potatoes. Clover is often used as nitrogen source. Studies were carried out during 2003-04 with cultivars Agria (for French fries) and Marlen (for chips) in 3 cropping systems with clover (3x mulching, 3x cutting, and 2x cutting + 1x mulching). Potato yields in 2003 and 2004 were approximately 34 and 30 t/ha, respectively. Yields of Agria and Marlen were 7.6 and 12% higher with mulching compared to cutting + mulching, respectively. High dry mass and starch contents (independent of cropping system) were found for both cultivars, resulting in good processing quality..
