The QS quality control scheme for potatoes.

Application of the German QS food quality control concept to ensuring quality and safety of potatoes is described. The system is based on a stepwise procedure involving self-monitoring using a specially developed check list and monitoring by an external body which can be carried out in conjunction with European good agricultural practice (Eurepgap) audits. Individual aspects considered include: areas covered by internal and/or external checks (e.g. cultivation methods, harvesting, handling, transport, storage and occurrence of residues); QS application procedures; and significance of the QS symbol for ensuring consumer confidence in food quality and safety.
