摘要

Exactly how much time and money did you spend on your garden last year? Most likely - hopefully - you have no idea. Most gardeners would see any such accounting as a slur on their motives. We do it for love, not money (well, mostly). But I am sure that most of us (apart from our editor, who currently has it all budgeted and worked out to the nth degree) would get a shock were we to add up the hours - and dollars - we spend just getting things to grow. Our desire to shape nature so it looks the way wethink it should draws us outdoors again and again - without a whiff of financial accountability - in the pursuit of verdant happiness. It's a particular type of happiness that comes as we coax life from bare earth, and we're generally reluctant to put a price on it.
