Nobody's prepared to pay the price

For once I agree with local government minister Bob Neill when he rejects the idea that councils should hike up their charges to fill income gaps (The MJ, 18 Nov).In a recession usual business sense dictates that as people have less money they become price-resistant. There is no sign that things will be picking up and wage rises will continue to be tight while inflation is up. The idea thatsomehow people will be prepared to cough up more for charges like swimming pools or parking is fanciful. They will simply do less swimming and less parking in response.
