Approaching the Crown On November 9, 2004, Toyota launched the new Mark X, a front-wheel drive luxury sedan. This is the successor to the Mark II. The name was apparently changed to signify a rejuvenation with the advent of the new century. The Mark II appeared in 1968, a luxury sedan that filled the gap between the Corona and the Crown. It rivaled the Nissan Laurel, and catching the wave of Japan's rapid economic growth, a total of 4.8 million units were built This made the Mark II one of Toyota's core models, following the Corolla (11.1 million units) and Corona (5.5 million). But the Mark II's presence was weakened with the advent of the minivan. That is why Toyota decided to change the car's name, and given that this was the model's 10th generation, the "X", signifying both "ten" and "the unknown", seemed the perfect name. One does feel a tinge of sadness at the disappearance of the Mark II, following that of the Corona, but this is the result of the fact that Toyota has adopted the same sort of product strategy as Nissan.
