In the 18th century Queen Squarewas one of Bristol’s most fashionableaddresses. Close to the port and citycentre, and built around a large publicspace adorned with an equestrian statueof King William III, a host of well-heeledBristolians took up residence here.Unfortunately, a combination of newerand smarter areas of the city being built inthe 19th Century and rash town planning inthe 1930s that saw a dual carriageway builtdiagonally across the square, meant that bythe 1960s this part of Bristol was in need ofregeneration.
