Czech steelmaker begins work on medium-slab mill

Even though it hasn't completed financing the project, Nova Hut of Ostrava, Czech Republic, is moving ahead with the first stage of a flat-products minimill that will include a medium-slab caster and a Steckel rolling mill. Nova Hut first announced the project in Nov. 1994 and has been negotiating for financing with private and public investors, including the International Finance Corp. of the World Bank. World Bank loans for the project have been held up until state ownership in the mill is reduced to less than 50 percent from the current 67 percent.
