US, Mexico Nearing Resolution Over Disputed Offshore Region

The US and Mexico have revived decades-old negotiations over how to divide up an area in the Gulf of Mexico that could potentially hold significant hydrocarbon resources but lies just beyond the reach of each country's exclusive economic zone. The area—known as the doughnut hole — encompasses a portion of the Gulf of Mexico that is more than 200 nautical miles from the coast of either the US or Mexico and is therefore outside of each country's exclusive economic zone.
