Shell Project Could Help to Dent Entrenched Glut of Northeast Gas

When Royal Dutch Shell starts production in 2020 at its greenfield Shell Chemical Appalachia petrochemical complex near Pittsburgh, it will be doing more than just boosting the economy by utilizing the region's shale gas bounty. It will be using more than 100,000 barrels per day of ethane feedstock — ethane that will not be rejected into the gas steam. And this has more of an impact than might be expected. Shell announced it was going ahead with the project early last week (p1), which will help reduce the glut of gas production in the region just as takeaway pipelines do, though on a much smaller scale.
