Obstacles to LNG Abound, But Can be Overcome

For the true believers in using LNG as a substitute fuel for diesel in the high-horsepower (HHP) mining, trucking and maritime industries, the lead argument has been in the cost difference between the two fuels, with diesel losing out. The devil, though, is in the details. "And there are a lot of details," said Tom Campbell, director of LNG & Gasification at Stratas Advisors. Campbell was one of the speakers at Hart Energy's World LNG Fuels 2015 conference held last week in Houston. "Spurred by falling crude oil prices, national diesel averages have fallen to the sub-$3 per gallon range," Campbell said. "LNG fuel has held steady thanks to cheap natural gas prices."
