Industry Spooked by Ottawa's Emissions Plans

Canada's oil and gas industry is concerned over proposed moves by the federal government in Ottawa to regulate in-dustry carbon emissions, which industry fears could threat-en oil sands development by duplicating efforts already in place by industry and the province of Alberta. Ottawa is considering advancing separate plans for reg-ulating carbon-capture technologies in Canada's booming oil industry, in large part to counter criticism from the US and the European Union that Canada is not living up to its climate change commitments and that emissions from its blooming oil sands industry should be reined in. The issue is of great importance to Canada's natural gas industry as gas is used in roughly half of oil sands produc-tion since it is required to heat water in order to separate the bitumen from the sand clinging to it.
