A new study that breaks down the cost of drilling a Marcellus Shale well in southwest Pennsylvania has found that a typical well costs about $7.65 million.The study by University of Pittsburgh researchers found the largest single contributor to costs was hydraulic fracturing expenses, at $2.50 million per well, followed by land acquisition and leasing costs, at $2.19 million.Researchers wanted to provide a realistic picture of the direct costs of natural gas drilling and analyzed a myriad of factors associated with a typical well in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
