A new study that breaks down the cost ofdrilling a Marcellus Shale gas well in south-west Pennsylvania has found that a typicalwell costs about $7.65 million.The study, by researchers at the Universityof Pittsburgh, found the largest single con-tributor to costs was hydraulic fracturing, at$2.50 million per well, followed by land ac-quisition and leasing costs, at $2.19 million.Researchers aimed to provide a realisticpicture of the direct costs of natural gasdrilling and analyzed multiple factors associ-ated with a typical well in WashingtonCounty, Pennsylvania.
