Growth and Yield of Potato as Influenced by Residual Effect of Soil Solarization

A field investigation was carried out at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore during 2000-2001 rabi to study the residual effect of soil solarization on weeds, growth and yield of potato. Eleven treatments were imposed to the preceding crop of groundnut which included covering soil with transparent polyethylene film (TPE) of two thickness (0.05 and 0.10 mm) spread for two durations (for 30 and 45 days), weedy check, week free and pre-emergent application of alachlor at 2 kg a. i. ha(-1). Residual effect of weed for check treatment to previous crop recorded minimum number of total weeds (29.67 0 0.25 m(-1)) and weed dry weight (17.34 g 0.25 m~(-2)) and was on par with TPE 0.05 mm for 45 days with one hand weeding. The tuber yield of potato was significantly higher with weeding (25.08 t ha~(-1)) over no weed hut closely by TPE (0.05 mm for 30 days + 1 HW).
