We read with much interest the article by Ok et al. [1]. Even with the limitation of being not randomized, this prospective case-controlled observational trial is an excellent demonstration that 8-h thrice-weekly in-centre haemodi-alysis (HD) provides morbidity and possibly mortality benefits compared to conventional 4-h HD [1]. Here, we report data of two very recent companion studies [2,3], which give further strength to the above study [1]. They were highly controlled experiments using a crossover design: 11 stable anuric patients underwent two bicarbonate sessions, one 4-h and one 8-h HD in a random sequence. The GENIUS system and high-flux FX80 dialysers (Frese-nius Medical Care, Germany) were used.
