Therapy: Statin potency is associated with risk of new-onset diabetes in patients with CVD

Patients treated with higher potency statins for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have an increased risk of diabetes compared with patients treated with lower potency statins, according to a meta-analysis of eight population-based cohort studies. Although the risks and benefits of statins for primary prevention of CVD are still a hotly debated topic, these drugs are routinely prescribed for secondary prevention of CVD. However, clinicians are still faced with the choice of which statin to prescribe.
