On March 1.6, rhe INGAA Foundation, the nonprofit research group affiliated with the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, released a study titled "Firming Renewable Electric Power Generators: Opportunities and Challenges lor Natural Gas Pipelines." Some 200 pages long, this study examined the pipeline infrastructure requirements that might he needed to fuel gas-fired generation as a backup for wind and solar power when rhe availability of the power did nor match the load depending on it. The study focused on the need for very reliable service to generators that have to be able to run without relying on spare pipeline capacity being available, and on the pipeline capacity and business-practice implications of large loads that can come on very suddenly, when weather fluctuations cause a wind farm or solar array to drop in output.
