Sea buckthorn and sea buckthorn oils - recent developments in China and Central Asia

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae spp.) and sea buckthorn oils are increasing in popularity in China, Russia and Central Asia. The background of this development is described. The different species and varieties of sea buckthorn are mentioned. The 2 different oils obtained from sea buckthorn (pulp oil and seed oil) and their chemical compositions (constituent fatty acids) are discussed. In traditional medicine, sea buckthorn and its oils are used to treat a variety of ailments. Although such claims are notdiscussed in this review, a number of references detailing such uses are listed.
