Rehabilitation of by-products: waste disposal is wasting food.

This paper presents the use of different byproducts in the formulation of compound feeds. The turnaround attributable to the following points in the use of byproducts for feed formulation is discussed: driven by consumer wishes for safety and transparency, everything that appeared industrial was demonized; the trade applied a margin to byproducts that increasingly brought them up to a level with grain and protein crop prices; and a thrust in global agricultural production meant that grain became steadily cheaper in relation to the general added value. Moreover, the difficulties faced by producers in marketing their byproducts correctly are considered. The use of byproducts for feed vs. energy production is also discussed (bioethanol industry). The benefits of making the quality of byproducts used in feeds constant are also presented.
