An airport is a place you go when you want to gain altitude. Right now, Snowy Mountains Airport just outside Cooma is up ahead. Scratched into the Monaro Plain, its main runway is already 940m above sea level. You may have heard of athletes going to higher altitudes to train. They do it because as you go higher, the availability of oxygen declines: train at altitude, the theory runs, and you'll have an easier time back at sea level.
