Hindleg paresis caused by an extradural, intra- and extraspinal teratoma in a black mangabey.

A 2.6-month-old black mangabey, Cercocebus aterrimus, with acute, progressive hindleg paresis caused by a teratoma is presented. The teratoma was localized both intraspinally (extradural from L2 to S2/3) and extraspinally (paravertebral on the left). The neurological images taken by the CT scan revealed an extradural intraspinal mass on the left side that displaced the myelon to the right. There was a widening of the vertebral canal from L2 to S3. The mass extended to the left extraspinal area via the neuroforamen of L5/S1 forming a cystic structure with bony parts. A teratoma was confirmed during necropsy. Our suspicion was that the neoplasm developed in the spinal cord near the neuroforamen of L5/S1 and that it grew both extraspinally and intraspinally which explained the widening of the vertebral canal and localization of the mass..
