Surgical treatment of a fragmented medial coronoid process of the ulna in dogs and the clinical results.

Between 1995 and 1997 surgery was carried out on 169 dogs (187 joints), of which 125 (74%) were males, 36 (21%) Rottweilers, 28 (17%) Bernese Mountain Dogs and 22 (13%) German Shepherds; 75 were <1 year old and 40 between 1 and 2 years old. The degree of arthrosis in each joint was assessed in accordance with the classification (grades 0-3) of the International Elbow Working Group (IEWG). Of the 133 joints (118 dogs) that were followed up, 80 (60%) showed full load-bearing (64 of these within 3 months), 12 no change, and 5 a worsening. The success of surgery was related to the grade of arthrosis before surgery; of 35 joints with grades 0-1, 34 (97%) showed full recovery or improvement compared with 70 (82%) of 85 with arthrosis of grades 2-3.
